Have I touched a life today? That’s the first question we as a nation should ask ourselves when we have made it through yet another chaotic, stressed out day.
The question of course should be asked in a positive way. If every American citizen, whether born in this country or not, would just ask him or herself every morning, “How could I help at least one person today?” This country could climb up out of its morally depraved state that it has steadily fallen into in just the last 50 years or so.
We as Americans have built this nation as a loving and compassionate haven for people who are from oppressed backgrounds. Can we really be “proud Americans” like we have so steadily fought for in the last two centuries?
If people would just look around their own small “space” they occupy in this vast country, and start to care again, we would be so much better off as a whole.
“It’s too hard”, you say? “There’s too much that’s gone wrong?” Or, “Let someone else do it.” Then there is the famous, “I’m only one person, what I feel doesn’t matter.”
This is what our nation has so quickly slid into. How hard is it to smile? If people would try to smile at the next person near them, they would be surprised to find out how infectious that can be. If people would stop trying to beat the system and use all their energy trying to figure out how they can get away with things and instead, face up to their responsibilities, we could once again stand strong as a nation and be heard throughout the world. All it takes is just a little effort and a lot of compassion for each other.
People are so afraid these days to say “Hi,” to a stranger. Why have we allowed, yes “allowed”, the immoralities of a few to take hold and squeeze this nation to corruption? Until the immoral ones are now numerous and the people who hide away are the ones with compassion and principles? Like it’s something they are ashamed of.
If it’s too hard to think of on such a grand scale, try just your neighborhood, or even your own household. Surely it’s not impossible to find a small area where one little action like a smile or kind word could make someone else’s day. How about that young cashier or paper person or salesclerk who is just starting out in the workforce who needs to learn that working for the public can be rewarding?
America is in serious trouble. Believe it or not it started out small and quietly. It snuck up out of its den of immorality ever so stealthily until there was not one place left that was untouched.
While we can never go back to the innocent and naïve times of yesterday, we can stand strong again on the wisdom we will have obtained by climbing up out of this infested mess and once again be a compassionate and caring nation!
Come on America! Let’s get going! Let’s roll up our sleeves, open up our eyes, ears and hearts. Let’s be heard once again!
